Overview
In 2025, I designed the mobile MVP for DefiFundr, a decentralized platform that reimagines payroll and invoicing for the modern gig economy. The project aimed to solve the liquidity friction contract workers face daily by leveraging blockchain technology to offer an immediate alternative to slow traditional banking. As a product designer who understands the nuances of freelancing, I knew that for this to work, the tech had to disappear, leaving only a seamless experience of getting paid.
The Challenge
For international freelancers and remote employees, receiving payments is often a fragmented experience. Traditional bank transfers are plagued by high fees, slow settlement times, and opaque processing statuses. While blockchain offers a solution through speed and transparency, the learning curve is steep. Managing wallet addresses, gas fees, and volatility is intimidating for the average worker.
The core objective was to abstract these Web3 complexities, creating a mobile interface that offers the security of blockchain transactions without the confusion typical of crypto wallets.
Taking a deep dive
To understand the landscape, I analyzed platforms across the HR, Fintech, and Crypto sectors to identify gaps in the current user experience.
Deel and Remote: Strong contractor payroll flows and structured approval patterns, but crypto transparency is not the core experience.
Binance: Powerful crypto rails, but the interface can feel dense for someone who simply wants to get paid and keep records.
Zerion Wallet: A clean wallet experience and strong visibility, but it assumes users already understand web3 concepts.
Onboard Wallet: A great example of simplifying the on-ramp experience, which influenced how I approached the wallet integration.
The Solution
The result was a unified mobile application tailored to the needs of contract employees and freelancers, consolidating essential crypto-financial tools into three key areas:
Smart Invoicing and Collections Instant Creation: A streamlined flow to generate digital invoices with customizable templates in under a minute.
Shareable Payment Links: Integration of QR codes and unique payment links enabled by Web3Auth, allowing clients to pay instantly via crypto without needing the app.
Real-Time Status: Leveraging blockchain immutability to show live updates from Viewed to Processing to Settled, eliminating the need to chase clients.
Stablecoin Salary Management Unified Crypto Dashboard: A clean interface that supports major Stablecoins like USDC, USDT, and DAI, giving users a volatility-free way to hold their earnings.
Smart Asset Control: Features allowing employees to easily manage their crypto portfolio and view their total asset value for better financial planning.
Future-Ready Architecture: The wallet structure was designed to be scalable, laying the groundwork for seamless fiat integration in upcoming versions.
Trust and Security Web3Auth Login: Removed the anxiety of seed phrases by implementing social login and biometric authentication like FaceID and TouchID.
Transparent Records: An immutable, searchable history of all earnings and timesheets that can be exported for tax compliance.
Let's design
I came alive once I got into Figma. After mapping journeys, research, and edge cases, I focused on turning strategy into clickable flows. Refining the UI details and watching the product take shape was the most rewarding part, bringing everything together into a seamless, intuitive experience.
Curtain call
Designing the DefiFundr MVP highlighted the delicate balance between security and usability. The project successfully demonstrated that blockchain technology can be accessible to non technical users when the interface prioritizes familiarity over complexity. By focusing strictly on crypto transactions for this initial release, we established a robust foundation for instant and transparent global payments.
